S'more girls and bugs...

These are a few more sketches I was doing to try to "find" a style for a little story I have flying around in my mind. Neither the story nor the style has been locked down. ( Not the first time you have heard that eh?... oh yes, I am Canadian!!)
I originally was going to go more realistic, but as I started drawing I realized I wanted something more loose, fun and kind of stylized (for me) and yet expressive. I only say that because when I go more or less realistic, I get caught up in the drawing and not expression.
These are just a few sketches of "me trying new things". I am not sure I am going this route or not. But thought I'd throw them up here for a looksee. Sorry Mike, no "little feets" on these. Their toes don't pop out till their shoes come off. :)

Cute. And definitely more expression that the life drawing, but the life drawing had 'life and movement' as well.

Keep playing around with this and sharing with us!

Krista,

Very nice. All the expressions are great.

I know what you mean - drawing for expression. I seem to always drift towards very simple faces, probably because you can sketch them out so quickly. When I was drawing up the characters for my project, anything too complicated just seemed weaker than the circle head with some dot eyes.

Good luck with your exploration. I'll keep tuned to your Blog for hints at your story. :)

You've got me sold on this one, and I'd think you were working this way for years had you not said otherwise. These seem very natural. I love the word "expressive"; because that's what cartoons are, they express something instantly and, when done well, I think stronger than any realistic interpretation. It's interesting, working in animation, we never really know, or feel, we have a style sometimes, because we have to draw like somebody else so often. (But that may just be me)

I did want to mention that your comments are just as engaging as your pictures, and it's nice to read that the same thoughts I have in my head are also racing around in other's.

Looking forward to art talks with you and KB.... :)

Lastly, and I almost hesitate, but.... dang..... she really is c-u-t-e.

That's okay, Krista. I forgive you! THIS TIME! While all of the sketches are great, I love the sketch at the bottom of the page; the streamlined design is very appealing!

This is the girl I've been trying to draw for years! ....to star in a film about a balloon wielding robot.

I promise I won't steal yours, but if I ever get around to making this film,
would you be interested in doing some design work?
